Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then found many other smeared vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in association with the event," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
