A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
